This has been passed down through the generations. It was my great grandmother's own recipe. I have passed it on to my daughters as well. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have over the years.

    Ingredients

    • 2 c. sugar
    • 3/4 c. crisco shortening
    • 1/4 t. salt
    • 2 eggs, well beaten
    • 4 T. cocoa powder
    • 1/2 c. buttermilk
    • 1/2 t. baking soda
    • 2 c. flour
    • 1 t. vanilla
    • 1 c. boiling water

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven at 350. Spray and flour a 9x13 cake pan.
    2. Dissolve 1/2 t. baking soda in the buttermilk, set aside.
    3. Cream together, sugar and crisco until creamy, add the eggs and beat well. Add the remaining ingredients, including the buttermilk and soda mixture. Mix well.
    4. Pour into prepared pan
    5. While the cake is still hot, spread butter over the top, allow to cool with cover on pan..
