Ertjie Sop/Pea Soup
From the Dutch heritage in South Africa a Pea soup adapted to local conditions Wonderful on a cold night Freezes well for up to two months Ingredients
- 500 gms split peas
- 2 med onions chopped
- 1 smoked hock
- 3 litres water
- salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- Put all ingredients in a large pot,
- bring to the boil and simmer until peas are soft.
- Add more water during cooking if need be,
- remove hock,debone and skin.
- Cut meat into small pieces and return to soup.
- Serve with Marmite and cheese grills*
- *Slice bread,butter and spread Marmite and top with grated cheese, grill till cheese melts
