    From the Dutch heritage in South Africa a Pea soup adapted to local conditions Wonderful on a cold night Freezes well for up to two months

    Ingredients

    •  500 gms split peas
    •  2 med onions chopped
    •  1 smoked hock
    •  3 litres water
    •  salt and pepper to taste

    Directions

    1. Put all ingredients in a large pot,
    2. bring to the boil and simmer until peas are soft.
    3. Add more water during cooking if need be,
    4. remove hock,debone and skin.
    5. Cut meat into small pieces and return to soup.
    6. Serve with Marmite and cheese grills*
    7. *Slice bread,butter and spread Marmite and top with grated cheese, grill till cheese melts
