What kind of apples are best for baking?

The best kind of apples are the more firm and crisp apples. Some of my favorite apples to use in this are Opal apples. They are resistant to browning and bake wonderfully.

You can also use Granny Smith, Jonagold, Braeburn, and Honeycrisp apples. Or, if you have a favorite apple, try that one out and see how you like it!

Which apple breaks down the most while being baked?

There are a lot of great apples. But for this recipe, you are going to want an apple that will hold its shape. So, you will want to avoid apples that break down easily when being baked.

One apple that tends to break down the most is the golden delicious. While it has a great flavor when you eat it raw, it is not the best baking apple.

    How to Make Baked Apples

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and bake the almonds to toast them until they become fragrant. Then chop them up into small pieces.

Wash the apples and then use a sharp knife to cut out the stem of the apple. Then use a melon baller to scoop out the center of the apple to create the cavity for the filling. Check to make sure the apples will sit up properly, if not remove part of the bottom until it does. Make sure to not cut through to the cavity you created. Now toss together the chopped almonds, cinnamon, honey, salt, and vanilla extract. Then add in the melted butter to finish the filling. Divide the filling amongst the apple cores and then place 1 tsp of butter on top of each apple. Pour boiling water and 2 tablespoons of butter into a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. When that is done, add the apples to the dish and place the dish in the oven and bake the apples for 35 to 45 minutes. While the apples are cooking, about every 10 minutes or so, baste the apples with the butter water in the dish. Press on the apples to see if they have a slight give but the apples are still firm. Serve the apples with a little more of the basting liquid and honey if you want.

How do you core an apple for baked apples?

Begin by cutting off the stem area and use a melon baller to carefully scoop out about 1 ½ inch area inside the apple.

Do you peel apples before baking?

No! You want the skin on the apples for this recipe. They help the apple hold firm while it bakes.

    How to Serve Baked Apples

After the apples are done baking, serve them with about 1 tablespoon of the basting butter water. You can also add a little extra honey and a dash of cinnamon, but that is optional.

    Storing and Reheating Baked Apples

You will need to store these apples in an airtight container, but do not try to stack them. They will break apart very easily if they are stacked. Then just keep them in the fridge until you are ready to eat them.

To reheat them, put them back in a baking dish with a little extra water and bake them at 375 degrees until they are warmed all the way through.

    Instructions

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Place almonds onto a baking sheet and toast them in the oven until they become fragrant, about 5 minutes. Do not walk away because nuts will quickly burn.

Chop the toasted almonds into small pieces and place them in a small bowl.

    Wash the apples well.

Take a sharp knife and cut the stem out of the apple.

Use a melon baller to scoop out the cavity of the apple. Remove a 1½-inch core out of the apple. Do not cut through the apple completely.

You may want to level the apple by checking to see if it will sit upright on its own. If it does not, trim enough off the bottom of the apple so it will sit upright.

Prepare the filling by tossing together the chopped almonds, ground cinnamon, honey, salt, and vanilla extract.

Add 2 tablespoons of melted butter to the filling.

Place the filling into the apples.

Place about 1 teaspoon pat of butter on the top of each apple.

Place boiling water and 2 tablespoons of butter into a 13 x 9-inch baking dish.

Place apples into the baking dish.

Bake apples at 375 degrees for about 35 to 45 minutes.

Baste apples about every 10 minutes while cooking.

Apples will be done when they are firm and give slightly when pressed.

When serving, spoon about a tablespoon of basting liquid over the apples.

You can drizzle honey on top if desired.
