These cookies are so soft and chewy, you can't tell these are healthy for you! Of course, I couldn't just make regular cookies with white flour. The whole wheat flour gives it a nutty flavor without having that full wheat taste. Adding the wheat germ gives it a nutritional boost that blends in with the batter without you ever tasting it. If you haven't heard of wheat germ, I highly recommend buying some to try it out for yourself. You can also sprinkle it on some yogurt in place of some granola. Try out this recipe for yourself and it is also kids-friendly... they will never find out how healthy they are.

    Ingredients

    • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (about 10 ounces)
    • 1 cup whole wheat flour
    • 1/2 cup quick cooking oats
    • 1/4 cup wheat germ
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup packed brown sugar
    • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup light butter, softened
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 large egg whites
    • 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips
    • Cooking spray

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350°.
    2. Lightly spoon flours into dry measuring cups. Combine flours, baking soda, and salt, stirring with a whisk.
    3. Combine sugars and light butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until well blended. Add vanilla, oats, wheat germ and egg whites; beat 1 minute. Add flour mixture and chips; beat until blended.
    4. Drop dough by level tablespoons 2 inches apart onto baking sheets coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on pans for 2 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely on wire racks.
