So if you are thinking of making this warm beverage any time soon then this is the recipe for you! It’s simply delicious. You can omit the extra bit of alcohol (rum, brandy) if you prefer it that way. However, raisins and almonds go hand in hand with this drink so I suggest you keep them in your drink rather than omitting them. Believe me I know what I am saying as I am not a big fan of raisins. This was our second attempt (trying to get the right balance of flavours) and I think it’s the real deal! So let’s get started!

    Ingredients

    • 1 Bottle Red Wine (750 ml)
    • 1 Orange
    • 1 Lemon
    • A Few Ginger Slices
    • 10 Cloves
    • 10 Cardamon seeds
    • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
    • 100ml Rum (Brandy or Whisky) – optional
    • 4 Tablespoons Sugar
    • 1 Teaspoon Orange Zest
    • A Handful of Raisins
    • A Handful of Almonds

    Directions

    1. Pour the wine into a saucepan, add cloves, cardamom seeds, 2-3 slices of ginger, cinnamon sticks and sugar. Throw in about a teaspoon of orange zest, 2-3 orange slices as well as lemon slices. Pour in freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice. For a lighter version add 100ml of water.
    2. Bring to the boil, let the sugar dissolve and reduce the heat to the lowest point.
    3. Let it simmer slowly for 15 minutes so the spices have time to infuse the wine (make sure it’s not boiling otherwise you could end up with a non-alcoholic version).
    4. Right before the end pour in rum (optional).
    5. Meanwhile:
    6. Roughly chop some almonds and throw them altogether with some raisins into mugs or heatproof glasses and pour over strained wine.
    7. Garnish with an orange slice and serve hot/warm. Don’t forget the spoons so you can fish out the almonds and raisins!
