    • 1 1/2 cup chana dal
    • 5 c water
    • 1/2tsp ground tumeric
    • 1/2tsp salt
    • 2 thin slices unpeeled ginger
    • 3tbls vegetable oil
    • 1/2tsp whole cumin seeds
    • 2 cloves garlic chopped
    • 1/4-1/2 tsp red chili powder


    1. put dal in heavy pot with water
    2. bring to a boil and remove surface skum
    3. Add tumeric and ginger
    4. cover, leavinglid slightly ajar,turn heat to low and simmer gently for 1 hour or until dal is tender
    5. Stir every five minutes or so during last 1/2 hour to prevent sticking
    6. Remove the ginger slices
    7. Add salt and garam masala to the dal
    8. Stir to mix.
    9. heat the oil or ghee in a small frying pan over medium heat
    10. When hot put in the cumin seeds followed by the garlic
    11. Stir fry until garlic pieces are lightly browned
    12. Put the chili powder into the pan
    13. immediately lift the pan off the heat and pour the mixture into the dal.
    14. Stir to mix
