In Search Of
Savannah is no joke, Witches.
There is SO much to see and do…people from all over the world visit here to make friends and memories. It’s no wonder that the alluring and mysterious city of Savannah is a vacation destination for hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals and families every year. Whether it’s the Savannah Scottish games, the restaurants, the tours, the Savannah Music Festival, River Street, City Market and everything in between, Georgia’s first city offers an eclectic mix of art, music,
food, theatre, and history.
That’s quite a heady brew, even for us locals.
There is constantly something new to dive into, something that we uncover and wish to indulge in, and new friends to make. J.C. and I love to be a tourist in our own town; we’ve gotten so good at it that we often hear “So where are y’all from; are you here on vacation?” We can frequently be found perusing shops on side streets, taking pictures of ourselves in front of historic markers, and even exploring new aspects of the lovingly familiar. We’re pretty amazing at “I.S.O.”- In search of. This week we went I.S.O.(are you ready?) a skateboard shop.
We were not disappointed. Plainview Skate Shop sits on historic Bay Street, stashed away in an upstairs store front. It’s been in business for almost a year, and carries everything from shoes to pants to boards to trucks. The conversation and friendly welcoming atmosphere earned it a Gold Star in our book. We’re returning shortly for Jesse’s birthday. It’s most definitely the sort of place you’d feel comfortable taking your child.
We discovered Kayak café- a little gem hidden in plain sight right on Broughton Street. It’s tucked up in a clever spot and boasts some of the more healthy and fresh salads, sandwiches, and tacos that Savannah has to offer. The worst thing about our meal was deciding on just one item each…well that, and leaving. They are open for lunch and dinner. We are already planning a return after dark one night. J.C. and I frequently find the best restaurants when we don’t make a plan.
This is particularly difficult one for me, but I’m learning to just go with it. Sometimes. Sorta.
O.K. not really, but I’m trying.
Bonaventure welcomes not only the departed, but us mortals as well to dive deep into the peace and serenity it offers each day.
Betcha can’t visit just once-
Until next time,
Peace in your heart
D-ivine Divan
6 servings, about 1 1/3 cups each
Active Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour
Ingredients
Preparation
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Coat a 7-by-11-inch (2-quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray. Place chicken in a medium skillet or saucepan and add water to cover. Bring to a simmer over high heat. Cover, reduce heat to low and simmer gently until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink in the center, 10 to 12 minutes. Drain and slice into bite-size pieces.
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add leek and salt and cook, stirring often, until softened but not browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Add flour; stir to coat. Add broth, milk, sherry, thyme
and pepper and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Add broccoli; return to a simmer. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup Parmesan, mayonnaise and mustard.
Spread half the broccoli mixture in the prepared baking dish. Top with the chicken, then remaining broccoli mixture. Sprinkle evenly with the remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan. Bake until bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Tips & Notes
Tips: To clean leeks, trim and discard green tops and white roots. Split leeks lengthwise and place in plenty of water. Swish the leeks in the water to release any sand or soil. Drain. Repeat until no grit
remains.
Sherry is a type of fortified wine originally from southern Spain. Don't use the “cooking sherry” sold in many supermarkets—it can be surprisingly high in sodium. Instead, purchase dry sherry that's sold
with other fortified wines in your wine or liquor store.
Ingredient Note: Most supermarkets sell broccoli crowns, which are the
tops of the bunches, with the stalks cut off. Although crowns are more
expensive than entire bunches, they are convenient and there is
considerably less waste.
