  • Hot Cross Buns

    Ingredients

    • 2 c. sifted flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon Arm & Hammer or possibly Cow brand baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon baking pwdr
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 3/4 c. sour lowfat milk
    • 1 tbsp. sugar
    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 4 tbsp. shortening
    • 1/2 c. raisins

    Directions

    1. Sift flour once, measure, add in baking soda, baking pwdr, salt, sugar and spices, and sift again. Cut in shortening. Add in raisins. Add in sufficient sour lowfat milk to make a stiff dough. Turn onto floured board. Knead slightly. Roll 1/2 inch thick. Cut with 2 inch cutter. Place close together in shallow pan.
    2. With sharp knife, cut a cross in each roll. Brush with a solution of lowfat milk and sugar. Bake in warm 475 degrees for 20 min. Brush again with sugar and lowfat milk solution. Fill cross with plain frosting. Serve warm. Makes 12 buns.
