There are hundreds of different pasta sauce recipes you can find online, on TV, in magazines and in books. However, some of the best recipes for sauce (or gravy as Italians call it) are going to be the ones passed down in families for year after year. This pasta sauce recipe is a basic recipe that has been passed down for several generations.

    Ingredients

    • 1 can tomato puree (28 ounces)
    • 1 can diced tomatoes (or crushed) (28 ounces)
    • 1 can water (using one of the 28 ounce tomato cans)
    • 1/2 onion, copped
    • 1 tbsp garlic, minced
    • Olive oil
    • Salt, pepper, oregano and parsley (1 tsp each, or to taste)
    • 2 bay leaves (remove before serving sauce)
    • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • 1/3 cup red cooking wine or red wine

    Directions

    1. Saute garlic and onion in a tablespoon of olive oil in your pasta sauce pot on the stove.
    2. Add tomatoes and 1 can of water to the garlic and onion mixture.
    3. Add spices, cheese and red cooking wine to the sauce.*
    4. Add meatballs and sausage to your sauce.
    5. Simmer for 2-4 hours, the longer the better.
    6. * Tip: For extra flavor, after you fry your meatballs and Italian sausage in a frying pan and add them to the pot of sauce, deglaze the frying pan. Add about 2-3 ounces of water to the pan and stir with a wooden spoon over low heat. All of the tasty meat bits that were stuck to the bottom of the pan will come off into the water. Pour the mixture into your sauce and stir.
