  • French Fried Golden Onion Rings

    Ingredients

    • 3 lrg Onions, Sweet
    • 1 c. Flour, sifted
    • 1 1/2 tsp Baking Pwdr
    • 1 x Egg, slightly beaten
    • 2/3 c. -water
    • 1/2 Tbsp. Lemon Juice
    • 1 Tbsp. Margarine, melted Oil for deep frying

    Directions

    1. Peel onions, cut into 1/4 inch slices; separate into rings.
    2. Sift flour, baking pwdr and salt into medium size bowl. Stir in egg, water, lemon juice and melted margarine just till blended.
    3. Dip onion rings in batter, a few at a time; fry in oil heated to 375 degrees (a cube of day-old bread will brown in 1 minute) about 2 min on each side.
    4. Drain the golden brown rings on absorbent paper. Keep warm in a low temperature oven (325 degrees) till all are cooked.
    5. The batter forms a crisp puffy envelope for this popular vegetable.
    6. There is archaeological evidence which onions (lily family) were cultivated more than 4,000 years ago. Onions, radishes and garlic were consumed in quantity by the laborers who built the Great Pyramid in Egypt.
