Cranberry Sauce with Apples and Cinnamon

Update your Cranberry Sauce with apples this year, a sweet yet simple update that is fun but not too crazy. After all, Thanksgiving is all about traditions!

While I was compiling my collection of Thanksgiving recipes that could be made in a slow cooker, I noticed that Cinnamon Apples showed up as a Thanksgiving food on many menus. Although this is not a typical offering at my family’s Thanksgiving table, I thought apples and cinnamon made an obvious addition to cranberry sauce. It’s not quite as exotic as adding, say, ginger and pears, but who wants to explore new culinary territory on Thanksgiving anyway? Cranberry Sauce with Apples and Cinnamon is just a little different, but not too crazy, and perfect to try out on the ultimate food holiday.

Cranberry Sauce itself is probably the easiest course on your Thanksgiving menu, so chopping up a couple of apples and stirring in some cinnamon won’t create undue stress on your meal planning. But, the apples will add sweetness while the cinnamon gives additional warmth to the dish. It reminded me of a cross between Cranberry Sauce and Apple Sauce, and I am excited to add this to my family’s table this year.

In a medium saucepan, bring sugar, water, cinnamon, and salt to a boil over medium heat. Stir occasionally until sugar is dissolved. Stir in cranberries and apples. Simmer until slightly thickened and the berries begin to pop, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature, about 1 hour. If using frozen cranberries, do not need defrost. Add about 2 minutes to simmering time. 3.3.2998
