Chinese Broccoli (gai lan)
Excellent side dish to any meal. No bitter taste and a little crunch. Ingredients
- 12 ounces gai lan or regular broccoli
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 slice fresh ginger (1/2 inch thick - peeled and sliced)
- Sauce:
- 3 T chicken broth (low sodium)
- 2 T oyster sauce
- 1 T Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
- 1/2 tsp sugar
Directions
- In a small pan combine: chicken broth, oyster sauce, rice wine and sugar. Bring to a boil and then turn down to warm until broccoli is blanched.
- Wash and cut off ends of broccoli and cut into 2 inch pieces.
- In a large saucepan, add enough water to cover broccoli and add: salt, baking soda and sliced ginger. Bring to a boil and cook for 3 or 4 minutes (until stalks are tender crisp) Rinse in cold water and drain.
- Pour sauce over broccoli and serve immediately.
