About me

I really enjoy cooking for my friends and family. I started frying mushrooms and onions with soy sauce when I was 12 (possibly inspired by Wok With Yan) and my uncle taught me to use a grill shortly after.

I was always trying new things and while living out of town in university, I discovered further South- and East-Asian flavours as well as developed a greater appreciation for Mediterranean cuisine.

In addition to a couple general interest courses I've taken at George Brown College, I think the internet has really helped me discover new ideas and flavours. I also pick things up from friends and family, as well as the occasional cookbook. Even if a recipe isn't great on its own, I can sometimes run with its basic concepts and turn it into something tasty.

Cooking Influences

I'm influenced by everything I see and taste. I enjoy fusion and trying new things, although I'm careful when mixing flavours.

On school days when I was sick, my grandmother would come over to care for me and we watched Pasquale the Singing Chef and Wok with Yan. My grandmother usually sang along (although she'd substitute Yiddish for the Italian lyrics).

When I was a teenager I had a job at a home show where I actually met Pasquale and was able to introduce him to my grandmother.

I hope that you will see me thru some fine Italian recipes in the times to come. I really enjoy Italian food. My great -grand Parents were from France to Acadia and then there was a mix of Mic-Mac first nation along the way. Regards TonyG

              Hi Daniel!
Thanks for following back. :) Oh my, wasn't Stephen Yan the best! I have traded a few cartoon shows for his show back then. I love his cleaver skills and his wok tossing was awesome. And like you, I was also taken care of by my grandmother when I was little, and I learned a lot from her how to cook well. :) Good to be connected here, Cheers!

                Hi Daniel,
                Thanks for the follow.
Nice meeting you and your site have some delicious and mouthwatering recipes!
I will love to try your dry potato and in my country it is called panch phoran for panch means five, five different spices are used at the beginning of the dish and as they started to splutter all other spices are mixed. In panch phoran we use nigella sativa instead of poppy seed but I will definitely try your version and I am sure it will turn out awesome!

I've heard of the spice mixture being called panch phoran, however, I didn't know that the poppy seeds are a substitute. I should find some nigella sativa - I imagine they make a difference to the dish. We have a big South-Asian community in Toronto so it shouldn't be difficult to find the appropriate spices. Thanks so much!

                                  Hey Brenda:

step 1 - complete your profile including linking to your blog and your RSS feed (so any additional recipes are added automagically).

step 2 - look about at the foodies you want to follow; I looked for people in Toronto first and then I looked at some recommended chefs. John Spottiswood (one of the big machers here) makes some great stuff.

step 3 - Reviewing and commenting works neat here as well. You can review other people's recipes via CES or go to their blog directly (I usually go to the blogs directly).

I haven't had much luck with the groups at this point in terms of getting discussions going, but the discussions allow you to create conversations AND add your recipes to groups as well (if that's what the group is about, e.g., a specific genre of food like dishes with olives).

Hello Daniel...nice to make your acquaintance here on CES.

I had a brief chance to look at your very appetizing recipes.
I appreciate your variations of meals and especially the ethnic twist you put on them.

Looking forward to all your contributions ;o)

Ciao for now and flavourful wishes,
