  • Red Velvet Cocoa Cake

    Ingredients

    • 1 c. Shortening
    • 1 1/2 c. Sugar
    • 2 x Large eggs
    • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
    • 3 Tbsp. Hershey'sr cocoa
    • 2 ounce Red food coloring
    • 2 1/2 c. Cake flour, sifted
    • 1 c. Buttermilk
    • 1 tsp Salt
    • 1 tsp Baking soda
    • 1 Tbsp. Vinegar

    Directions

    1. It is supposedly the one which was on the Hershey's Cocoa label. You are on your own for the frosting . . .
    2. Cream the shortening and sugar. Add in Large eggs and vanilla; beat well. In a separate dish, blend cocoa and food coloring; add in to the sugar mix. Ad flour, buttermilk, and salt alternately. Mix soda and vinegar in a c. and add in.
    3. Butter and flour two 9" cake pans. Divide the batter proportionately between the tw pans. Bake at 350x for 30-35 min. Let cold before frosting.
    4. Note: Better results can be obtained using a red paste food coloring, available in specialty shops or possibly cake decorating supply departments.
