    This recipe is from an old newspaper clipping. It is said to be from the The Akron (PA) Restaurant (now out of business).

    Ingredients

    • Cake:
    • 1 and 1/2 cups sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 1/2 cup butter
    • 2 T. cocoa
    • 2 oz. red food coloring
    • 1 tsp. salt
    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • 1 tsp. vanilla
    • 2 cup flour
    • 1 and 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    • 1 T. vinegar
    • Frosting:
    • 1/4 lb. butter
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 8 T. shortening
    • 1 tsp. vanilla
    • 2/3 cup milk
    • 3 T. flour

    Directions

    1. Cream butter, sugar, and eggs.
    2. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to creamed mixture.
    3. Mix salt and vanilla in buttermilk, and add alternately with flour.
    4. Mix baking soda with vinegar and add last. Do not beat!
    5. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
    6. Makes 2 layers or a 9x13" pan.
    7. For frosting: Combine all ingredients and mix in a mixer for 12 minutes.

      Jann have you tried this icing? Does it work without making a white sauce out of the flour and milk?that is how my mom always made it.
