    Ingredients

    • 1 cup lard, shortening, butter, or margarine
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 2 cups dark baking molasses
    • 2 tbsp vinegar
    • 6-8 flours
    • 3/4 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • 2 tbsp ginger
    • 4 tsp baking soda
    • 1 cup boiling water
    • additional sugar

    Directions

    1. Cream together the shortening, sugar, and the egg until light and fluffy
    2. When light and fluffy, beat in the molasses and vinegar
    3. Stir together the dry ingredients
    4. Dissolve the baking soda in the boiling water
    5. Add the dry ingredients and the soda-water mixture alternately to the creamed ingredients
    6. Add more flour if needed to make a soft dough
    7. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets
    8. Sprinkle with the additional sugar
    9. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes
