  • Dutch Apple Pie

    Ingredients

    • single crust pastry
    • 2 1/4 lbs. Granny Smith apples (about 6), peeled and cored
    • 1 1/4 lbs. Golden Delicious apples (about 3), peeled and cored
    • 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
    • 3/4 c. granulated sugar
    • 3 Tbs. flour
    • 2 Tbs. butter, cut up
    • 1/3 c. heavy cream
    • 2 Tbs. apple butter
    • For Topping
    • 1/2 c. flour
    • 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
    • 4 Tbs. butter, cut up
    • 1 tsp. cinnamon
    • 1/3 c. chopped walnuts
    • 1/3 c. chopped pecans

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut apples into 1/2-inch thick slices and place in a large bowl. Toss with lemon juice. In a small bowl, combine granulated sugar, flour, and cinnamon, Stir to mix. Add to apples and toss well to coat. Turn apples into pie shell. Dot with butter.
    2. Place pie with a piece of foil underneath to catch drips on bottom oven rack. Bake 30 minutes. In a measuring cup, mix cream with apple butter until smooth. In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, butter, and cinnamon to form topping. Mix with fingers until crumbly. Stir in walnuts and pecans.
    3. Remove pie from oven. Drizzle cream mixture over apples. Crumble topping evenly over apples.
    4. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees. Cover edge of crust with foil. Bake 30-35 minutes, or until bubbly and top is browned. Place pie on a wire rack and let cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.
