This is a saucy and savory beef dish. It would be great as a light refreshment at a party or as part of a weeknight dinner. If you like things spicy, you can also substitute green pepper for green chili. Sesame seeds and scallions would be great toppings for this dish as well. This bold flavored braised beef needs a red wine that can compete with the intensity of the dish.

    Ingredients

    • 16 ounces beef brisket
    • 3 cloves garlic
    • 1 tsp five spice
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
    • 3 tbsp honey
    • salt and pepper to taste
    • 4 ounces green pepper
    • 3 cups beef stock
    • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

    Directions

    1. Mince the garlic and the green pepper.
    2. Cut the beef brisket into bite-sized pieces.
    3. In a pan, heat oil and sear the meat until brown and set aside.
    4. Saute the garlic and the green pepper.
    5. Add the seared beef and saute for a couple of minutes.
    6. Add the soy sauce and the hoisin sauce and simmer for 1 minute.
    7. Add the beef stock, honey, and five-spice.
    8. Bring to a boil and simmer for 40 minutes or until fork-tender.
    9. Add salt, pepper, and taste.
