Southern Country Fried Steak and Gravy

Growing up my mother would make this and serve it with good ole- mashed potatoes.. That gravy on top of the potatoes and the country fried steaks with a fresh tomato and big glass of sweet tea was all I needed.

Hope you enjoy..

Ingredients

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 t. garlic powder
  • 1 c. plus 1/4 c. all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 lb. boneless beef top loin,
  • cut into 4 pieces and flattened to 1/4-inch thick
  • shortening for frying
  • 3-1/2 to 4 c. milk

Directions

  1. Beat together egg, buttermilk, salt and pepper in a shallow bowl; set aside. In another shallow bowl, mix together garlic powder and one cup flour. Dip meat into flour mixture, coating both sides evenly; dip into egg mixture and back into flour. In a large cast iron skillet, heat 1/2 inch shortening until very hot. Add meat; cook until golden on both sides and cooked through, turning once. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate; keep warm. Drain skillet, reserving 1/2 cup drippings. Blend remaining flour into drippings over medium heat. Gradually add milk to desired consistency, stirring constantly, until thickened. Heat through; add additional salt and pepper to taste. Serve gravy over meat. Serves 4.
