This was a delicious thrown together recipe. It's super easy to put together and is tasty to boot! Make sure you bake it on a pan that won't drip or you will have a mess like I did. I used a fresh pizza dough from my local grocery store. It made the prep time much shorter. I will be serving this for some football parties.

    Ingredients

    • 1 pizza dough
    • 1 medium onion, sliced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 red peppers, sliced
    • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
    • 2 tbs butter
    • 2 tbs olive oil
    • 1 package chopped spinach
    • 1 tbs dry basil
    • 1 tsp dry oregano
    • salt to taste
    • 3/4 pound spicy italian sausage, bulk
    • 1 can plain tomato sauce
    • 2 cups italian cheese mix

    Directions

    1. Melt butter in a pan with olive oil over medium heat.
    2. Saute onions and garlic for 2-3 minutes.
    3. Add red pepper and mushrooms cook for another 2-3 minutes.
    4. Add frozen spinach and spices. Cook until warmed through.
    5. Cook sausage crumble it slightly.
    6. Stretch dough to about the size of a cookie sheet. This is easier if you put the calzone together ON the cookie sheet you will put in the oven.
    7. Layer sauce, veggies, cheese, and sausage in the middle of the dough.
    8. Pull dough over to cover the filling. Tuck ends under. Cut small steam vents in the top.
    9. Cook at 450 for 20-25 minutes until crust is golden brown. Let stand for 5 minutes before you cut it.
