Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. Orange juice
  • 1/4 c. Buttermilk
  • 1 lrg Egg
  • 1/2 tsp Almond extract
  • 3 c. Unbleached flour
  • 4 tsp Baking pwdr
  • 1/2 tsp Baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 8 Tbsp. Cool butter
  • 1/2 c. Sugar
  • 1/2 c. Finely minced almonds, (up to 3/4)
  • 1 Tbsp. Orange zest

Directions

  1. Grate orange peel and set aside. Squeeze orange juice. In a small bowl beat juice, buttermilk, egg and extract till smooth. In a large bowl combine flour, baking pwdr, baking soda and salt till well mixed. Cut in butter with a pastry blender till mix looks like fine granules. Add in sugar, almonds & orange zest and toss to combine proportionately. Using a fork, stir in egg mix to create a soft dough. Turn out dough onto a floured board. Knead several times just till well mixed. Shape 8-10 slightly flatten rounds.
  2. Bake in 375 degree oven for about 20 min or possibly till browned.
  3. Makes 8-10scones.
  4. Note: These are even more flavorful the next day.
