My BBQ sauce is spicy and sweet, has a smoked flavour and is great with pulled pork, pulled beef or pulled chicken sandwiches. You can serve it with any meat to enhance its flavour.

    Ingredients

    • 2 1/3 cups (320 ml) packed dark brown sugar
    • 1 - 23 oz (640 ml) can tomato sauce
    • 1/2 cup (140 ml) tomato paste
    • 1/4 cup (60 ml) Worcestershire sauce
    • 2 tbsps (30 ml) ketchup
    • 2 tbsps (30 ml) Cajun type seasoning blend
    • 2 tbsps (30 ml) red wine or beer
    • 1 tbsp (15 ml) honey or agave nectar
    • 1 tbsp (15 ml) Braggs soy sauce or soya sauce
    • 1 tbsp (15 ml) regular yellow mustard
    • 1 tsp (5 ml) Tabasco sauce
    • Juice of 1/2 lemon or lime
    • 1 tsp (5 ml) garlic salt
    • 1 tsp (5 ml) cayenne pepper
    • 1 tsp (5 ml) black pepper
    • 1 tbsp (15 ml) Mesquite or Hickory Liquid Smoke

    Directions

    1. In a large saucepan, stir together the BBQ sauce ingredients. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Do not cover. Simmer the sauce for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Makes approx. 3 cups.
