Ingredients

  • 10 slices of white bread, cut into cubes
  • 6 eggs
  • 3 cups of hot milk
  • 3/4 cup of white sugar
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup of raisins
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1/4 tsp of ground nutmeg

Directions

  1. Before you do anything, preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Next, combine the bread cubes, raisins, cinnamon and melted margarine in a large bowl. Mix this well and then transfer the mixture into a two quart baking dish. I do not really like the crusts so I always cut them off beforehand. Instead of raisins, you could also substitute with diced apples. The trick with successfully using raisins in this recipe is to soak them in boiling water for about eight minutes so as to soften them. If you are going to use apples like I do sometimes, be sure to soak them in melted butter for a similar period of time which will make them soft.
  3. Beat the eggs in the same bowl and then stir in the vanilla, sugar, and salt until the sugar is dissolved. Whisk in the hot milk slowly. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, sprinkle some nutmeg on top and then set this aside to soak for about five minutes.
  4. Bake the pudding in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes. I normally just check by inserting a knife into the center to see if it will come out clean. Serve this dish hot and enjoy.
