Canine & Feline Healthy Pumpkin Balls
Pumpkin and Sweet Potato are great vegetables for our pets for the following reasons: 1.) Digestive Health: Pumpkin & Sweet Potato are fabulous sources of fiber, vitamins and minerals for our furry friends. It can also help dogs and cats with indigestion, upset stomachs or constipation. The minerals calcium and magnesium along with the high water content help with that. They're good for hairballs in cats--much more healthy than the oil-based hairball formulas. 2.) Urinary Health: The oils in pumpkins’ flesh and seeds along with the vitamins and minerals found in cranberries are believed to support urinary health. 3.) Weight Loss: Dogs seem to love the flavor of pumpkin, reduce the amount of kibble and replace equal portion of canned pumpkin. The fiber content will make their tummy feel just as full, and they might even thank you for the additional flavor. Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Canned Pumpkin or Sweet Potato (Tip)
- 4 Tbsp. Molasses
- 4 Tbsp. Water
- 2 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 2 Cups Brown Rice Flour (Tip)
- 1/4 Tsp. Baking Powder
- 1/4 Tsp. Baking Soda
- Optional Add-Ins:
- 1/4 Cup Dried Cranberries, Chopped
- 1/4 Cup Carob Chips, Brown or White (Yogurt)
- 1/4 Cup Roasted Pumpkin Seed, Chopped
- Garnish (Optional):
- Melted Carob Chips
- Melted White Yogurt Chips
Directions
1.Pre-heat oven to 350°F.2.Mix pumpkin, molasses, olive oil and water together in a bowl.3.Add the rice flour, baking soda, and baking powder and to the mixture and stir until dough softens. Stir in one or more of the add-ins if using.4.Scoop out small spoonful of dough and roll into balls using your hands (wet hands work best).5.Set the balls onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and flatten with a fork.6.Bake approximately 25 minutes or until dough is hardened.Garnish (Optional):1.If desired, drizzle melted carob chips over cookies. You can dip the bottom side of the treats. If you use white yogurt chips, have fun with food coloring.Cook's Tip:1.I prefer to use fresh cooked & cooled pumpkin/sweet potato. If you use canned DO NOT use the pie filling, it may contain spices that are toxic to dogs and cats.2.You can replace the brown rice flour with whole wheat. Rice flour is preferred, since it is easier to digest and gentle on stomachs. It also provides the same crunchy nutty flavor as whole wheat.3.For cat treats: Make tiny balls and press with fingers. Adjust cooking time to about 10 - 15 minutes. Or do as I would, make into 1 inch balls, press until 1/2 thick. Then using a moist knife, cut treat in 4 sections; separating each section a bit.Similar Recipes
