    Flaky pastry turnovers with a hearty steak and potato filling is what makes this sure to satisfy any appetite.If wished, omit flaky pastry.Use enough pie pastry for 3 single crusts.

    Ingredients

    • For Flaky Pastry:
    • All purpose flour- 2 & 1/2 cups
    • Granulated sugar- 1/2 tsp
    • salt-1/2 tsp
    • Cold vegetable shortening,Cut up- 3/4 cup
    • Egg yolk (large) -1
    • Cold water-5 tbsp
    • White vinegar- 1 tsp
    • OR you could use store bought Flaky pastry sheets.
    • FOR BEEF AND POTATO FILLING:
    • Inside round steak, diced-1 cup (8 oz)
    • Finely diced,peeled potato- 1 cup
    • Grated carrot -1/2 cup
    • Ketchup- 2 tbsp
    • Soy sauce- 1 tbsp
    • Worcestershire sauce- 1 & 1/2 tsp
    • Seasoned salt- 1/2 tsp
    • Pepper -1/4 tsp
    • Large egg, fork - beaten

    Directions

    1. Flaky Pastry - Hand Method:
    2. Combine flour, sugar and salt in medium bowl.Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.Beat egg yolk, water and Vinegar with fork in small bowl.Slowly add to flour mixture,Stirring with fork Until mixture starts to come together.Do not over mix.
    3. Food Processor Method:
    4. Process 1st 4 ingredients until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.Add egg yolk,Water and vinegar.Pulse with on/off motion until dough starts to come together.Do not over- process.
    5. Turn out onto lightly floured surface.Press pastry into ball.Flatten slightly into disc.Wrap in plastic wrap.Chill for 30 mins.Makes about 1 & 1/4 lbs ( 560 gm) pastry.
    6. BEEF And Potato Filling:
    7. Combine 1st 9 ingrdients in large bowl.Makes 2 cups filling.Divide pastry into 6 equal portions.Roll out 1 portion on lightly floured surface to 7 inch circle.Spoon about 1/3 cup filling into centre of the circle.
    8. Lightly brush edge of circle with egg.Fold pastry over filling.Crimp decorative edge to seal.Repeat with remaining pastry and filling, for a total of 6 turnovers.
    9. Arrange in single layer on greased baking tray.Brush tops and sides of each turnover with egg.Cut small slit in top of each to let steam escape.Bake in 400 F (205 C) oven for 20 mins.Reduce heat to 350 F ( 175 C).Bake for about 30 mins until golden.This freezes well.Makes 6 Turnovers.
