Ingredients

  • Filling:
  • 12 oz. of chunk Salt Pork
  • 1 Medium Onion, chopped fine
  • 1 Stick Butter
  • 3 cups Buckwheat
  • 1/2 handful of Rice
  • 3 tbs. Fresh Dill
  • Pepper to taste
  • Crust:
  • 5 cups Flour
  • 4 tbs. (heaping) Crisco
  • 1 cup Water (have some more handy)

Directions

  1. Cut salt pork into pieces and fry with onions, browning lightly. Add Crisco to this..Drain off excess grease.
  2. Cook buckwheat and rice in water. Bring to a slow boil, then rinse and repeat 2 times. The 3rd time, let it keep cooking until it starts to thicken. Remove from heat. Add fried pork/ onions and dill. Add pepper to taste.
  3. Crust:
  4. Mix ingredients, knead and roll out dough. Place dough in a pie plate.
  5. Add buckwheat mixture to pie plate, cover with dough, trim and fold down edges.
  6. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour. After baked, rub some Butter on the crust edge so it wont be too dry.
  7. Grandma Nellie said this goes well with a cold glass of beer!
