    So for all you fellow dog-lovers out there, here’s a simple and healthy Apple Carrot Dog Biscuit recipe for your special pup. Apples and carrots are favorites of our K9 friends because they are sweet, crunchy and full of nutrition. Carrots are packed with vitamins such as beta-carotene, which is helpful for ocular health. Many dogs love apples which contain calcium, vitamin K, vitamin C, and pectin (soluble fiber). However, raw carrots cannot be fully broken down in your dog's digestive tract due to insufficient enzymes. Shredding them in this recipe helps them cook, this way they can be fully digested by your pet. As for apples, beware of the seeds and stems, they contain items considered toxic to our pets. I recommend exchanging shredded zucchini, in equal parts, for the carrots/apples in this recipe. Or simply mix and match. Zucchini is a good source of calcium, potassium, beta-carotene, and folate. Zucchini is best fed raw or frozen but can also be served cooked.

    Ingredients

    • 2 ½ Cups Whole Wheat Flour
    • ½ Cup Quick-Cooking Oats
    • 1 Tbsp. Brown Sugar
    • 1 Small Apple
    • 1 Small Carrot
    • 1 Large Egg, Beaten
    • 1/3 Cup Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
    • ¼ - ½ Cup Water (As Needed)

    Directions

    1.
    Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly coat 2 baking sheets non-stick cooking spray or use parchment paper.

    Peel and grate apple and carrots (I used a food processor).
    3.
    In one bowl, mix the flour, oats, and brown sugar. In separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the oil, water, and grated apples and carrots. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients bowl and mix completely.
    4.
    Carefully roll dough out and cut out desired shape with chosen cookie cutter. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes, or until apple juices are soaked and biscuits are firm.
    5.
    After biscuits cool, feel free to share with the pups in your life! Store in air-tight container.
    Cook’s Note:
    1.
    Gluten-Free Option: Replace whole wheat flour with brown rice flour and quick-cooking oats to gluten-free oats.
    2.
    Exchange carrot with ½ cup dried cranberries, chopped for an apple-cranberry biscuit.
    3.
    Apples/Carrots/Zucchini add moisture, only add extra water if necessary.
    Yield: 15 - 20
